These are what Da Guy considers to be “the best of the best” when he travels to Vegas, and would keep seeing them again over and over if he could. Here you’ll find the shows that really can’t be duplicated anywhere else. Be sure to click on the show names to gain access to further information on this site and others.

Ka — A massive Cirque du Soleil production that will keep you on the edge of your seat all the time — high-tech meets Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand in an experience you’ll never forget.

O — It’s a tie between this “must see” Cirque du Soleil production in, above and around the water, and the awe-inspiring production and stage movements of Ka. They are both spectacular and indescribable. How fitting a show with the class of this is at the Bellagio.

Donny & Marie at the Flamingo Showroom through October 2010. A super terrific show in one of the last old-time intimate Vegas showrooms.

Mystere — The original permanent Cirque du Soleil production in the world, here at Treasure Island. It may not have the water or a really fancy moving stage like you’ll find in O or Ka, but it’s still one of the best, and perhaps one of the better price performers for a great seat on the Strip as well.

Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular — You may have seen it on stage elsewhere, but this 95 minute production with all the songs, a $40M theatre, redone effects and a chandelier beyond your imagination is awaiting you at the Venetian.

David Copperfield — You’ll find him performing at the MGM Grand in the more intimate 700-seat Hollywood Theatre a few times a year when he’s not on tour elsewhere. Perhaps today’s greatest illusionist. He’s got an attitude about him, but no one can beat his magic, and if you see him at THIS place, you’re so close you’ll never forget your utter amazement.

Jersey Boys — a perfect fit for Vegas

The Lion King — at Mandalay Bay — the biggest production yet

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art – Exhibits change every few months, but the Monet and Ansel Adams shows have been wonderful

Others

These don’t make Da Guy’s “must see them again” list you found above, but are certainly worth your consideration at least once!

Love — Beatles meet Cirque du Soleil at the Mirage

Le Reve — At Wynn, it’s good, but not quite a Cirque du Soleil show even though it’s by the director of Mystere and O, just down the Strip.

Wayne Brady — Improvisation at the Venetian several times a year

Jay Leno — He’s at the Mirage a couple of times a year

Blue Man Group — Percussion, audience participation, and blue men at the Venetian

Free-Bees

There are not a lot of bargains and there isn’t much that’s free in Vegas any more, but here’s some of Da Guy’s favorites you should give a try:

Bellagio Fountain — Different music in the afternoons and evenings — a must see many times. Check out some of the photos in the album up above.

Lion Habitat at the MGM Grand — Usually after 11AM in the morning you can see the live ones while you play those slots. Be sure to check out any baby cubs tucked away inside.

Mirage Volcano — The first “free show” concept on the Strip compliments of Steve Wynn. Watch it blow its top every hour in the evening.

The Sirens of TI — Scantily clad women are in the lead these days as Treasure Island attempts to change its image, but it’s still a pirate show with cannons and a sinking ship just like you’d see on a Hollywood set, when you get down to it. Da Guy just does not get the new plot, assuming there is one. Super big-time free production on the Strip. Plays several times every evening, assuming the weather, including the wind holds. Get there early for a great viewing spot.

Rio Masquerade Parade in the Sky — Howz about a little Mardi Gras over the casino?

OK, so what do you think of when someone says Nevada? Desert. First US nuclear testing ground. Dead cow skulls and snakes. Part of Lake Tahoe is in Nevada — did ya know that? How about silver mines, Hoover Dam, Reno and the Las Vegas Strip. It’s really a pretty diverse place.

These days, for Da Guy, it’s all about the diversity of Vegas, not necessarily gambling on those 25 cent slots — but the lights, the people watching, the shows — yes, Cirque du Soleil — and the food! No, you don’t find a lot of those free rooms and cheap buffets any more. This isn’t your Vegas of 20 years ago, and long gone are the days trying to make it a family destination, as Vegas has gone upscale. It’s now THE place to treat yourself and as the advertisements say, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”.

Have a great time, and bring your money — it won’t come home with you!

It’s sort of a shame, but “the big guys” have effectively bought up all the big casinos on the Strip. Each still looks different at first glance, but to those that come again and again to Vegas, you’ll see how some things are starting to look or feel a lot more the same these days. MGM more recently built the mega City Center complex including the Aria Hotel and Casino, and have acquired the majority of the properties in Vegas including the Bellagio, Mirage and Mandalay Bay that are some of Da Guy’s favorites. From a slots winning perspective, they’re now all about the same (not that great unfortunately). Harrah’s has not only it’s namesake property on the strip, but the Flamingo, Rio, Paris, and Caesars. Same story there on the slots, I’m afraid. Try the outlying casinos and get off the strip if you really care about winning on that quarter slot, or Da Guy has had some recent luck at Wynn, Encore, the Venetian and Palazzo where they serve semi-decent free wine in a real wine glass to players, just like the Bellagio. …might as well treat yourself right, if you can — don’t you agree?

Star Trek — the official site

Thanks to the genius of Gene Roddenberry, this is the series that started it all in the early 60′s and provided enjoyment for many of us for nearly 40 years. Of the five TV series and many movies, three Series are standouts for Da Guy:

Enterprise — the latest series which was cancelled after an all-to-short 4 seasons, set in the time before the original Star Trek. This is where it all began — establishment of the Prime Directive, early connections with the Vulcans and other species. Da Guy’s favorite series, by-far, due to the great casting, attention to detail helping to tie all the story lines from it’s predecissor series together, and great character development on-par with the much longer running TNG. Nearly all of these episodes are worth watching again, to the degree Da Guy has the complete DVD set. The best of the best include:

Episode 721 (#1 in the Enterprise Series) “Broken Bow” starts the human search into the far reaches of space

Episode 7 “The Andorian Incident” is where we are introduced to the Andorian, we find out some things about the Vulcans, and Archer begins his role as negotiator between intergalatic worlds

Episode 13 “Dear Doctor” is where the concept of the “Prime Directive” is created

Episode 19 “Acquisition” is funny and our introduction to the Ferrengi

Episode 35 “Singularity” is where the terms “Condition Red” and “Tactical Alert” come to be

Episode 60 “Twilight” is all about relationships and loyalty

Episode 62 “Similitude” will get you thinking

Episode 67 “Harbinger” is where Tripp and Topol get hooked up

Episode 73 “E2″ is the connection with TNG

Episode 83 “The Forge”, 84 “Awakening”, and 85 “Kishara” start bringing this series to a close

Star Trek — the original series that started it all. A bit campy today with it’s dated aliens and special effects, but where the exploration started for so many of us around the world. Captain Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, and all the rest

Star Trek – The Next Generation (TNG) — The series that took place after the original ended, and put us in touch with a great cast, terrific character development, Picard, and Data.

The oldest of today’s major Hawaiian island chain, and perhaps the most laid-back of the major neighbor islands with some of the most stellar lookouts.

In one glance, colors range from orange on the slopes of Waimea Canyon to the green of the pines and other vegetation, to clear turquoise ocean with so many hues of blue you’ll lose count. Helicopter rides, and the wettest place on earth at the top of a very ancient volcano with more than 600 inches of rain each year.

The place South Pacific and Jurassic Park were filmed. Puff (remember the Magic Dragon?) lives here in Hanalei. Friendly people everywhere.

It’s not where you go for a lot of night life, a lot of action, or the best beaches (although it can all be found if you give it a little effort). This is where Da Guy comes for a two or three day visit to rejuvenate and take in what Paradise IS all about.

Home of historic sites such as the only Royal Palace in the United States; Hawaii’s State Capital in Honolulu; Diamond Head; Waikiki and the beach boys; the original Royal Hawaiian Hotel and it’s Mai Tai Bar; Duke’s; the North Shore with it’s surfin’ dudes and dude-ettes — and whoppin’ size waves early each year. While you’re there and before you drive by it on the new bypass around the town of Haleiwa, stop in at Matsumoto’s for the best shave ice on earth — it’s a must with ice cream and no azuki beans please, every time you take a ride around this place.

Be sure to get an early start one morning and head out to Pearl Harbor to remember the men of the USS Arizona and the perils of World War II.

Another of Da Guy’s favorite hotels, the Moana Surfrider is here on Waikiki beach, as well as many of Da Guy’s favorite restaurants including the original Roy’s and Alan Wong’s (oh wow!). Go to Cindy’s in China Town for lei’s, try a manapua and a local plate lunch from one of the shops or wagons all around the island, and stop in at Long’s for those take-home gifts of Kona coffee, mac nut candy, and the like. Get a great aloha shirt (no touristy electric colors, please!) at the fine stores in Ala Moana Center.

Take in the many great beaches, fabulous friends, Da Guy’s extended Ohana, a culture and melting pot of people that cannot be beat, and the place where Da Guy was fortunate to live twice for a total of nearly eleven years. It’s a GREAT place and as all his friends know, a place Da Guy has never really left in spirit.

Some of the best beaches; outstanding scenery; fabulous resorts such as the Grand Wailea; great art galleries that have helped adorn the “other” Bert’s Place; leisurely shopping on Front Street in Lahaina; night life to please just about anyone; and any outdoor activity you can imagine is here.

You can coast a bicycle down nearly 27 miles of a volcano — Haleakala, translated as “the House of the Sun”. This place is an adventure unto itself — you can drive up to the peak in this National Park and take in (or hike down into) the crater that last blew its cork only a 100 years ago. The views at sunrise are something you’ll never forget, and coming back down through the pastures and the clouds is always magical, no matter your mode of transportation. Do stop by the protea farms along your journey.

For those that can deal with a zillion twists and turns in a car for a lengthy day trip, the drive to Hana has some spectacular vistas, one of the few remaining black sand beaches, and roadside waterfalls that will bring many welcome surprises.

Tourists abound at this place almost everywhere you look, but it still can’t be missed by most, and remains a favorite just the same.

Perhaps the most diverse island in terms of what Mother Nature brings to bear — desert, heat, cactus, rain forest, and the worlds most active volcanoes on the youngest of the islands (above sea level). This is home to Pele, the Hula, and annual Merrie Monarch Festival that Da Guy so enjoyed. Waterfalls abound on the Hilo side of the island and the vistas as you cross the many bridges are hard to top. You may be lucky enough to see snow-covered volcanic peaks in the middle of the summer. There is the unbelievable desolation of not-so-old lava fields, anthurium fields with their red heart flowers known the world around, the largest cattle ranch outside of Texas, the unfortunate site of some horrible tsunamis here in the United States, the place Captain Cook first landed, some of the largest Kona coffee plantations, home of the Iron Man, and oh, so much more here on the Big Island of Hawaii.

What Lanai does have besides some new very high-end townhouses for those zillion-airs in the world, is two of the most wonderful high-end resorts in the islands including the Lodge at Koele which is one of Da Guy’s favorites.

This is where Da Guy swam with (wild) dolphin and a good friend, Les, who grew up on the Plantation and today lives on Oahu with his own family.

It’s the place to come, play a little golf if that’s your thing, ride a horse, see the massive pine trees that were planted on the top of the island years ago to help increase the amount of rain (really!), perhaps go riding in a jeep or out on a catamaran. Certainly you’ll be able to get away from the hustle and bustle while you take in some of Paradise at it’s best. Just ask Bill Gates — this is where he bought out the island for his marriage many moons ago.

Da Guy’s favorite resorts, hotels and properties around the globe that he has enjoyed over the years. While he may not have stayed at some of these places for a few years, the memory of the experience remains as if it were just yesterday. What makes a great resort and gets it on this list? It’s the whole package — the place, the service, the sights, the sounds, the restaurants, and the amenities. None of these are your road-trip “Motel 6″ type joint, so bring your wallet and enjoy.

The Best of the Best

Da Guy has stayed at a lot of outstanding places over the years, and that’s all that is listed on this page, but if you try to pin him down to name his “Top 5″ most memorable favorites of all time, here they are.

1. The Savoy – London (The Strand), England

This is THE classic that opened in 1889. It’s now part of the Fairmont Hotels chain, but it hasn’t lost it’s charm. Art deco in style. Superior service in every way. Great restaurants — the Savoy Grill, Banquette, Afternoon tea in the Thames Foyer, and the wonderful River Room for a bright and airy breakfast where the staff will remember you from day-to-day as if you too were royalty. Ever heard of Gilbert & Sullivan and the Savoy Theatre? Yes, it’s here now with more contemporary stage productions, just beyond the hotel entrance. Ritz, Escoffier, Caruso, Gershwin playing in the Thames Foyer and his debut of Rhapsody in Blue in 1925, Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ball, Chaplin, Olivier & Leigh, Elaine Stritch, Elton — they’ve all been a part of this classy place in the West End. …and don’t forget the one and only American Bar — another true classic. The Savoy completed a multi-year remodel in late 2010, so Da Guy can’t wait to check it out again.

2. Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa – Wailea, Island of Maui, Hawaii

Da Guy has been fortunate to stay here several times, including in its first month many, many moons ago. It’s hard to beat. Out of the way and seems like light years away from Kaanapali with the majority of the tourists and hustle and bustle. Paradise in every way. …and a pool experience that can’t be beat. Check it out!

3. The Four Seasons Lodge at Koele – Island of Lanai, Hawaii

One of the two resorts on the Island of Lanai, and Da Guy’s favorite. Now part of the Four Seasons. You’d never expect pine trees, cool and crisp air, and a true lodge-like feel on what used to be known as “the Pineapple Island”. It’s quiet and perfect. If you just have to have that beach experience, hop on the shuttle and in 20 minutes enjoy all the amenities at its sister resort at Manele Bay. You’ll love it. Check out some of Da Guy’s pictures of the place here.

4. Bellagio Hotel & Casino – Las Vegas (on the Strip), Nevada

Now part of the MGM family of Casinos, and a class act in every way. One of the two or three best resorts on the strip, but #1 in Da Guy’s book. Home of “O”, and many stellar restaurants right in the middle of the action. You’ve got to see the fountain shows out front — free to the public, or get a lakeside view room and watch from your room while listening to the synchronized music on TV channel 31. It’s only in Vegas. Check out photos of da place on the Nevada page.

5. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa – Anaheim, California

An absolutely breath-taking craftsman style hotel in the heart of Downtown Disney with its own private gate into Disney’s California Adventure and only steps away from the original Disneyland Park. Class, service, and attention to detail that one comes to expect from Disney properties, but certainly the very best Da Guy has ever stayed at. Home of Napa Rose, one of the top West Coast restaurants and a new favorite of Da Guy’s. Da Guy was bowled-over with his stay in 2008. Check out photos of this resort on the Disneyland Resort page.

More of the Best

…and there are a lot more outstanding places Da Guy has stayed over the years, but to keep this to “the best of”, here are the rest, in no particular order, that stand out above all the others.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa – Lake Buena Vista (Walt Disney World), Florida

Walt Disney World’s top of the line resort, with a look so much like that of the Hotel Del, yet just one stop away from the Magic Kingdom. Home of Victoria & Albert’s.

Disney’s Yacht Club – Lake Buena Vista (Walt Disney World), Florida

Another favorite of Da Guy’s at Walt Disney World, just a 5 minute walk through the International Gateway to Epcot, or take a Friendship ride to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. One of the two best pools of any resort anywhere, on par with the Grand Wailea.

Hotel Del Coronado – Coronado (San Diego), California

Remember the movie, Some Like it Hot? It was filmed here. Edison wired this place. White sand beaches that go on-and-on, just moments “over the bridge” from downtown San Diego. Once you step in the door, you’ll know what “classic” is all about.

London Hilton on Park Lane – London (Hyde Park), England

Super location within easy walking distance to Harrod’s and Buckingham Palace. Hilton’s flagship property in this 28-story modern hotel. Check out Trader Vic’s Restaurant.

Montage – Laguna Beach, California

Super craftsman-style resort and spa. You’ll know you’re in California when you arrive. What a location! Home of Studio — a true dining experience.

Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa – Monterey, California

Steps from the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, with many rooms overlooking, and some literally OVER Monterey Bay itself. Watch sea otters from your balcony and window, while taking in all the great service this place has.

Ritz Carlton Laguna Nigel – Laguna Nigel, California

What can you say — it’s a Ritz Carlton and service is their pleasure. On a bluff overlooking the Pacific.

Sheraton Moana Surfrider – Honolulu (Waikiki), Island of Oahu, Hawaii

The oldest hotel in Waikiki. Refurbished back into the look and feel of its earlier days. Picture postcard views of Diamond Head that is so close you can almost touch it. Yes, another classic. …and while you’re here, be sure to check out its sister, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel — the famous Pink Palace, just a short walk away with the original Mai Tai Bar.

Tokyo Hilton – Shinjuku-Ku (Tokyo), Japan

The original place Da Guy stayed on his first trip to Tokyo, just after this hotel opened. Outstanding service and french pastries to die for. Walking distance to Shinjuku Station.

Wynn Las Vegas– Las Vegas (on the Strip), Nevada

From the man who started all the mega resorts on the Strip — The Mirage, Treasure Island, and what no one thought could be beat, the spectacular Bellagio, comes his latest creation with private golf course and everything else you can imagine..
