The neighborhood is a bit daunting as Korea Town has grown up around da place, but don’t let that stop you. Thank goodness for valet parking!

Erik Schats Bakery $ — in Bishop on the left just before the curve on 395. Sheepherder and chile cheese bread to die for.

A great casual place with good food, right on the beach.

Julian Pie Company $ — in Julian and Santa Isabel, but also at some markets in the San Diego area. The fresh blackberry pie is to die for!

Award winning California-style cuisine with a wine list that does not stop, along with a large comfortable bar area.
When Da Guy is at a decent restaurant (not a fast food joint), it really ticks him off when:

Young children don’t have basic manners. Practice makes perfect before they get to go out to a nice place, just as it was with Da Guy before he got to go to his parents favorite restaurant, The Magic Lamp, so many years ago. …or why not get a Sitter in consideration of others? Some parents don’t need to train their children at other patron’s expense.

People are on their cell phone for extended periods. Do people really need that thing plugged in their ear 24 hours a day? Why can’t some people either turn it off for a while, put it on mute, or get up from their table and go somewhere else if the call is of any length?

Life is too short to drink cheap wine. It’s that simple. The next question is “Red or white?” For Da Guy, the answer is generally “white”, as those cheap reds give him a headache and too much tannin just isn’t his thing. He can be talked into a nice Pinot Noir, sometimes a Merlot with a great piece of beef, and then, his view of the ultimate red — Opus One — will always work if you’re the one buying! The best part is everyone gets their own opinion when it comes to the almighty grape — it’s a different experience for each of us, and never the same time after time.

Here is a baseline of some of Da Guy’s favorite vineyards and his recommended finds — both the everyday and for those special occasions. It tends to be all about California wines along with some of those tasty Oregon and Washington State varieties added in for good measure. Clear on the other side of globe though, he’s found a couple tasty picks from New Zealand and several from South Africa that he was introduced to at Jiko — his #1 restaurant pick at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

What you won’t find here are references to those so-called wines that come in boxes and should be used only with 7-Up or Sprite in a backyard summer spritzer, or those with liquid contents that likely cost less than the bottle and shipping/handling costs to get it to you. Da Guy would rather have a nice cold glass of water, please!

Your trivia for the day: Jiko is the #1 US importer of South African wines. Go for it, Disney! Who says you’re just for kids?

Da Guy’s favorite resorts, hotels and properties around the globe that he has enjoyed over the years. While he may not have stayed at some of these places for a few years, the memory of the experience remains as if it were just yesterday. What makes a great resort and gets it on this list? It’s the whole package — the place, the service, the sights, the sounds, the restaurants, and the amenities. None of these are your road-trip “Motel 6″ type joint, so bring your wallet and enjoy.

Top 5

More of the Best

The Best of the Best

Da Guy has stayed at a lot of outstanding places over the years, and that’s all that is listed on this page, but if you try to pin him down to name his “Top 5″ most memorable favorites of all time, here they are.

1. The Savoy – London (The Strand), England

This is THE classic that opened in 1889. It’s now part of the Fairmont Hotels chain, but it hasn’t lost it’s charm. Art deco in style. Superior service in every way. Great restaurants — the Savoy Grill, Banquette, Afternoon tea in the Thames Foyer, and the wonderful River Room for a bright and airy breakfast where the staff will remember you from day-to-day as if you too were royalty. Ever heard of Gilbert & Sullivan and the Savoy Theatre? Yes, it’s here now with more contemporary stage productions, just beyond the hotel entrance. Ritz, Escoffier, Caruso, Gershwin playing in the Thames Foyer and his debut of Rhapsody in Blue in 1925, Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ball, Chaplin, Olivier & Leigh, Elaine Stritch, Elton — they’ve all been a part of this classy place in the West End. …and don’t forget the one and only American Bar — another true classic. The Savoy completed a multi-year remodel in late 2010, so Da Guy can’t wait to check it out again.

2. Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa – Wailea, Island of Maui, Hawaii

Da Guy has been fortunate to stay here several times, including in its first month many, many moons ago. It’s hard to beat. Out of the way and seems like light years away from Kaanapali with the majority of the tourists and hustle and bustle. Paradise in every way. …and a pool experience that can’t be beat. Check it out!

3. The Four Seasons Lodge at Koele – Island of Lanai, Hawaii

One of the two resorts on the Island of Lanai, and Da Guy’s favorite. Now part of the Four Seasons. You’d never expect pine trees, cool and crisp air, and a true lodge-like feel on what used to be known as “the Pineapple Island”. It’s quiet and perfect. If you just have to have that beach experience, hop on the shuttle and in 20 minutes enjoy all the amenities at its sister resort at Manele Bay. You’ll love it. Check out some of Da Guy’s pictures of the place here.

4. Bellagio Hotel & Casino – Las Vegas (on the Strip), Nevada

Now part of the MGM family of Casinos, and a class act in every way. One of the two or three best resorts on the strip, but #1 in Da Guy’s book. Home of “O”, and many stellar restaurants right in the middle of the action. You’ve got to see the fountain shows out front — free to the public, or get a lakeside view room and watch from your room while listening to the synchronized music on TV channel 31. It’s only in Vegas. Check out photos of da place on the Nevada page.

5. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa – Anaheim, California

An absolutely breath-taking craftsman style hotel in the heart of Downtown Disney with its own private gate into Disney’s California Adventure and only steps away from the original Disneyland Park. Class, service, and attention to detail that one comes to expect from Disney properties, but certainly the very best Da Guy has ever stayed at. Home of Napa Rose, one of the top West Coast restaurants and a new favorite of Da Guy’s. Da Guy was bowled-over with his stay in 2008. Check out photos of this resort on the Disneyland Resort page.

More of the Best

…and there are a lot more outstanding places Da Guy has stayed over the years, but to keep this to “the best of”, here are the rest, in no particular order, that stand out above all the others.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa – Lake Buena Vista (Walt Disney World), Florida

Walt Disney World’s top of the line resort, with a look so much like that of the Hotel Del, yet just one stop away from the Magic Kingdom. Home of Victoria & Albert’s.

Disney’s Yacht Club – Lake Buena Vista (Walt Disney World), Florida

Another favorite of Da Guy’s at Walt Disney World, just a 5 minute walk through the International Gateway to Epcot, or take a Friendship ride to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. One of the two best pools of any resort anywhere, on par with the Grand Wailea.

Hotel Del Coronado – Coronado (San Diego), California

Remember the movie, Some Like it Hot? It was filmed here. Edison wired this place. White sand beaches that go on-and-on, just moments “over the bridge” from downtown San Diego. Once you step in the door, you’ll know what “classic” is all about.

London Hilton on Park Lane – London (Hyde Park), England

Super location within easy walking distance to Harrod’s and Buckingham Palace. Hilton’s flagship property in this 28-story modern hotel. Check out Trader Vic’s Restaurant.

Montage – Laguna Beach, California

Super craftsman-style resort and spa. You’ll know you’re in California when you arrive. What a location! Home of Studio — a true dining experience.

Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa – Monterey, California

Steps from the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, with many rooms overlooking, and some literally OVER Monterey Bay itself. Watch sea otters from your balcony and window, while taking in all the great service this place has.

Ritz Carlton Laguna Nigel – Laguna Nigel, California

What can you say — it’s a Ritz Carlton and service is their pleasure. On a bluff overlooking the Pacific.

Sheraton Moana Surfrider – Honolulu (Waikiki), Island of Oahu, Hawaii

The oldest hotel in Waikiki. Refurbished back into the look and feel of its earlier days. Picture postcard views of Diamond Head that is so close you can almost touch it. Yes, another classic. …and while you’re here, be sure to check out its sister, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel — the famous Pink Palace, just a short walk away with the original Mai Tai Bar.

Tokyo Hilton – Shinjuku-Ku (Tokyo), Japan

The original place Da Guy stayed on his first trip to Tokyo, just after this hotel opened. Outstanding service and french pastries to die for. Walking distance to Shinjuku Station.

Wynn Las Vegas– Las Vegas (on the Strip), Nevada

From the man who started all the mega resorts on the Strip — The Mirage, Treasure Island, and what no one thought could be beat, the spectacular Bellagio, comes his latest creation with private golf course and everything else you can imagine..

A personality. An icon. Easy-going — a regular person. A spy. Love. Interesting. Inspiration. Unique. The first celebrity chef. Hilarious. That voice. Passion. Would hate to clean that kitchen afterwards! PBS – Johnny Carson – GMA – Saturday Night Live. A Peabody. An Emmy. No product endorsements. Funny. Devoted to Paul. The kitchen in the Smithsonian. Butter. She bakes, and it’s all simply fabulous — especially the cakes and cookies! Da Guy has never had a failure or disappointment. As Da Guy’s brother says, “they’re not icky sweet!” Yes, always, just right! If you need the right bakeware, including some not so readily available pans, check out Bridge Kitchenware.

Wolfgang Puck

He’s Da Man. Love every bit of it!

Gordon Ramsay – London, US, and around the globe

Holy cow — did you see him on Hell’s Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word, or the British and US versions of Kitchen Nightmares? This is one perfectionist, and Da Guy will never forget that memorable dinner at his intimate restaurant in London. Watch for him on BBC America and FOX.

Charlie Trotter – Chicago

Roy Yamaguchi – US, Asia and the Pacific

Da Guy who started it all with his Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine. If you’ve seen the Favorite Restaurants articles, you must have seen the trend the guy has for California and Asian-inspired food, or that Da Guy has been to more than a dozen different Roy’s Restaurants around the world. There must be something to this guy, wouldn’t you say?

…and then of course, Da Guy’s personal favorites:

his Mom

his Grandmother — that’s Da Guy’s Mom’s Mom, aka “Mimi” to her grandsons. Check out a Little Guy at her place with his favorite past time before he could really help-out in the kitchen

A great friend, Nancy — and I bet you don’t have a personalized recipe book from Ray & Nancy, do you? You should be really jealous, because Da Guy isn’t sharing.
