The “second Park” across the plaza from the original Disneyland, now part of the much larger Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

Da Guy’s Personal Don’t Miss Attraction List

This list is pretty small at this point, but it’s rapidly growing as Disney enhances this Park in a major construction project now underway.

Soarin’ — the original, and now in Epcot as well. It’s perhaps Da Guy’s favorite, anywhere, any time!

Toy Story Midway Mania — super in every way for every friend and family member. A new Disney classic.

Pixar Play Parade — most days. It’s high energy and a lot of fun. Check out some pictures in the Photo Album

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror — the California Adventure version of the Florida classic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The actual ride here is shorter and a little more to-the-point.

Hyperion Theatre — if a show is playing here, do not miss it. High quality, Broadway style, included in your park admission.

It’s Tough to be a Bug — cute, but scary for the little ones or if you have an affliction towards spiders!

Turtle Talk with Crush — the ambience is so much better at Epcot, but if you’ve not seen this technology or have little ones with you, it’s not to be missed here in California

Muppet Vision 3D — really good

…not on Da Guy’s normal hit parade, but may be when he’s playing tour guide with friends

Grizzly River Run — if you want to get REAL wet, this is the one

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue — cute for the little ones, but with the exception of a scene or two, just not up to par with the original Fantasyland dark rides over at Disneyland Park

The latest of the four parks at Walt Disney World, and one of Da Guy’s favorites. It’s “nahtazu” in Disney-speak. (Get it? “Not a Zoo”) It IS all about real and mythical animals, conservation, and fun. Be there when it opens, and don’t forget the 4PM parade … it’s different and it’s great. Da Guy was fortunate enough to be at Walt Disney World during a soft opening of the park back in 1998. Amazing. The Cast Members turned on what’s now called “DINOSAUR!” just for him. Da Guy is still freaked-out by the Carnosaur. A once in a lifetime experience having a new park almost to himself.

Da Guy’s Personal Don’t Miss Attraction List

He’s not just a roller-coaster kinda guy, but as you’ll see loves the big spectacles. No one does them like Disney!

Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain — take a classic like Big Thunder and multiple it by 2! Just great!

Festival of the Lion King — the number one stage show on property

Once you see the show, check out the photos of a much older Lion King Parade at the original Disneyland here and see if anything looks familiar

Kilimanjaro Safaris — the morning is still the best to see all the animals

Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade at 4PM — it’s a different one that you’ll really enjoy

DINOSAUR! — called “Countdown to Extinction” when the park first opened, with great vehicle technology borrowed from the Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland, and a Carnosaur that breathes down your neck! Watch out!

It’s Tough to be a Bug — a classic 4-D experience, designed for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and reincarnated at Disney’s California Adventure

…not on Da Guy’s normal hit parade, but may be when he’s playing tour guide with friends

Kali River Rapids! – you’re gonna get SUPER DRENCHED all year round, so beware!

Da Guy’s Personal Don’t Miss Attraction List

He’s not just a roller-coaster kinda guy, but as you’ll see loves the big spectacles. No one does them like Disney!

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror — perhaps Da Guy’s favorite attraction if he could only pick one. This is THE original.

Fantasmic! — take what started at Disneyland and expand it into a permanent attraction seating more than 6,000 people. It’s worth the 2 hour wait to get that certain location once each night

Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show — This show comes from Paris, and what a production! Check the schedule for limited show times each day.

Muppet Vision 3-D — Jim Henson’s last collaboration with Disney

Voyage of the Little Mermaid — it was there the day the Studios opened, and is just a fresh and wonderful today for kids of all ages. Don’t sit too close to the front — this is one that 3/4 back is far superior if you can do it.

The Great Movie Ride — a little dated with almost no changes since opening day, but still a lot of fun especially if you need some cool-time inside or to get out of the rain. Check out the Wicked Witch of the East — best spot is right side of first 2 cars if you can!

Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream — great history, Imagineer stuff, and movie tribute at the end

…not on Da Guy’s normal hit parade, but may be when he’s playing tour guide with friends

Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular — everyone loves it the first few times; Da Guy has just seen it a zillion times since it’s original opening with the park

Rock ‘n Roller Coaster Starring AeroSmith — it’s fast, dark, and the first loop-de-loop roller coaster by Disney

Star Tours — another classic, based on the original Star Wars IV (how many years ago was that?) Don’t do it if you are prone to motion sickness!

It’s not quite what Walt had envisioned as his prototype community of tomorrow, but partly so. It’s also not what some people think of as an adults-only Park given several of it’s high-tech and most popular rides anywhere, albeit this is probably the most grown-up Park with it’s great shopping, eating, and drinking places around World Showcase, along with the annual International Flower & Garden Festival and super spectacular International Food & Wine Festival. This is a favorite of Da Guy’s as part of the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Soarin’ — from California, and wow, it’s outstanding

The American Adventure — relive the history of the US with a classic Disney superb production like nothing you’ve seen before. Ben Franklin and Samuel Langhorne Clemens (aka Mark Twain) are your hosts.

Illuminations Reflections of Earth — every night at 9PM

International Food & Wine Festival — Adults will find this special “every Fall” event is more than icing on the cake on top of everything else in the Park. Be sure to check out the website for schedules of events and activities to sign-up for well in advance of your travel.

Test Track — super! Not scary, just fast!

Turtle Talk with Crush — the little ones will love it as they interact with Crush, and so will da big ones in this live and always different interactive show. You’ll be amazed how technology is used to make it all come together. A must-see for everyone.

Honey, I Shrunk the Audience — classic 4-D show

O Canada! — a classic Circle Vision movie and that song you won’t get out of your head

The Seas with Nemo and Friends — a well done, and sorely needed refresh opened in early 2007 to the Living Seas pavilion. Ride in your clam-mobile to find Nemo and his friends in this animated, but technical show integrated within the aquarium.

Ellen’s Energy Adventure — Da Guy is not sold how good that Audioanimatronic Ellen is, but the intro and ride technology are unmatched

Spaceship Earth — everyone wants to see what’s inside

…not on Da Guy’s normal hit parade, but may be when he’s playing tour guide with friends

Mission: Space — There are two versions of this since Summer 2006, one with and one without the G-Force. Da Guy prefers “without please”. Call him a wimp if you like, but let’s try the Tower of Terror as many times as you want to go, OK? You thrill seekers have fun in the orange line — Da Guy will take the green line. Just remember — please don’t eat before you ride …and if you don’t like cramped spaces, this one isn’t for you either!

Be sure to check out Da Guy’s descriptions of many of these places here and some of his favorite places to eat at the resorts here.

Da Guy’s Favorite Hotels & Resorts

Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort

If you’re on a budget or are one of those folks that just use your room to lay down that head of yours, here’s a great place on-property. Motel-like in accommodations, but certainly a Disney themed location with lots of free parking, big pools, a food court, and all the other extras you get because of staying “on-property”. Get a “premium” room for a location closest to Stadium Hall (check-in, food court, and transportation center), or be ready for a trek to some of the rooms.

The All-Star Music and All-Star Movies resort are similar in accommodation with different theme, and just a little further along the bus route than the All-Star Sports, so give them a try as well.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Wow, if you’re into animals, this is THE place to be. All types of rooms are available in this mammoth resort, but if you’re going to stay here, you really want one with a savannah view, and the best ones are in the back overlooking the areas where the zebra, giraffe, and others roam. If you thought the Wilderness Lodge was an awesome piece of architecture, this latest resort has it beat. There is a huge pool, but it’s shallow to be a lot more family friendly. It’s one short 5-minute bus hop to the Animal Kingdom, and everything else is also via bus so that’s your tradeoff staying here. Seeing animals out your window when you get up in the morning, or come back for a mid-day break, is hard to beat — it’s certainly Disney style! …and Da Guy’s #1 restaurant pick, Jiko, is here as well. Sitting around the fire pit in the evening is great. How can you go wrong?

Disney’s Boardwalk

Guests stay at the Inn. Family members (like Da Guy) of the Disney Vacation Club are welcomed home to the Villas. Both are within a quick walk to Epcot via the International Gateway (between UK and France), or take a Friendship to the Disney’s Hollywood Studios. What a location.

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

The first massive resort with more moderate-priced rooms. It’s close, but not within walking distance, to Epcot and Disney MGM-Studios. A great place where Da Guy likes to stay for those quick weekend jaunts. Rooms are spread out in communities around a huge lake where it can take 15 minutes or more for the bus to enter, hit the main bus stops and exit. Once you stay at this place, get a feel for where you’d like to stay again, and request that location the next time close to shopping, bus stops, entrance, or the peaceful environs on the other end.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

One of the original hotels on property. Yes, this is the one the Monorail goes through if you stay in a Tower room. Be sure to specify the view you prefer when you make your reservation, and if you can flip the bucks, go for a Seven Seas Lagoon View room in the tower. Awesome. …and the only hotel that allows you to walk to the Magic Kingdom. Of course, it’s just a quick Monorail trip away if you like as well.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

4-star luxury. The lobby is to die for, and be sure to catch the band late most afternoons. If you make advance reservations, afternoon tea at the Garden View lounge is a great respite. One hop of the monorail to the Magic Kingdom.

Disney’s Polynesian Resort

The other original resort from when the Magic Kingdom opened. Until Da Guy made his move to Paradise many moons ago, this was a favorite. Now, for him, it’s like “going home”, but for others, this is definitely a bit of Paradise while you’re in the World, complete with the “Aloha” greetings. Two short hops on the Monorail to the Magic Kingdom, or walk to the TTC to get to Epcot or take a boat. So many options!

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

Simply stunning architecture with a running river from the lobby out to Bay Lake. Catch the geyser that blows throughout the day. Terrific place for families. A boat ride to the Magic Kingdom or catch the bus to anywhere else.

Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts

Stay at either place — they are connected via the most awesome pool known as Stormalong Bay. The difference is in the room decor. A quick walk to Epcot via the International Gateway, a boat ride to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or take a quick bus to anywhere else. Hard to beat this location, that’s for sure! “Beaches and Cream” has awesome sundaes in this old-fashioned ice cream parlor. Da Guy, his friends and family have stayed at these resorts many times — it’s hard to beat.

Who would think some of the finest dining is at the resorts and hotels at Walt Disney World? Here are Da Guy’s favorites.

Favorite Foods around the Resorts and Hotels

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Jiko — The Cooking Place $$$ — It’s Da Guy’s #1 at Walt Disney World. A “must go at least twice” place while he’s there for his annual trek. The best service. The best food. The best wine list — and all from South Africa.

Boma — Flavors of Africa $$ — Stellar buffet-style restaurant where you can try out all those Mediterranean dishes

Disney’s Boardwalk

Flying Fish Cafe $$$ — service is sometimes a bit rugged compared to, say Jiko, but the food is always great. A terrific Chef’s Counter if you’d like to give it a go as well!

Big River Grille & Brewing Works $$ — good lighter fare and the only on-property microbrew for those beer lovers

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

California Grill $$$ — after opening, this was Da Guy’s #1 for years, but unfortunately it’s a bit “over managed” by “THE management” vs. the Chef, the last couple of times Da Guy was there. Food was stellar, and you can’t beat the location on top of the Contemporary. Get Priority Seating so you arrive 20 minutes or so before the Magic Kingdom Fireworks for an experience you’ll never forget.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Grand Floridian Cafe $$ — great breakfast, lunch, or cafe-style dinner

Victoria & Albert’s $$$$ — big bucks and very formal with every waiter and waitress named Victoria or Albert. Some the best food you’ve ever had, and be sure to go with the wine paring option. Suit and tie required in this 5-star restaurant. Who says it’s all about hot dogs and hamburgers? Ha!

Disney’s Polynesian Resort

Kona Cafe $$ — still one of Da Guy’s two favorite breakfast places on property after all these years. Go for the mac-nut pancakes or Tonga Toast. …no, you don’t need the syrup they give you with the Tonga Toast! Get there early or later … it can be one busy place as the families finally get going and want to hit the Magic Kingdom.

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

Yacht Club Galley $$ — breakfast, lunch and dinner. Da Guy’s favorite (non-Character) breakfast buffet for sure.

Yachtsman Steakhouse $$$ — The best “traditional” steakhouse on property

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop $ — best ice cream parlor ever, and just as they used to be

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

Artist Pointe $$$ — unfortunately there can be a lot of kids here given the upper mid-point nature of this resort. so your experience will vary, but the food and wine is all about the Pacific Northwest. Awesome, unless you’re sitting next to some screaming or misbehaving children.

Favorite Food beyond the Parks, Resorts and Hotels

There are hundreds of places in the Parks, Resorts, and Hotels to get some great food, but here are some of the placed beyond even those you may want to explore.

Downtown Disney Marketplace

Rainforest Cafe $$ — The first one on property (the other is outside of the entrance to Disney’s Animal Kingdom), and for Da Guy, this one is still da best. Go for the Rasta Pasta and have garlic breath the rest of the day!

Downtown Disney West Side

Wolfgang Puck’s Cafe $$-$$$ — Da Guy loves this place. Sit in the bar and get something to eat, have some terrific sushi, eat in the more casual cafe, do some take out express, or in the evenings, the more formal place upstairs is open as well. It’s a definite favorite with Da Guy for lunch, and you’ll find him here at least once each time he visits Disney World. A perfect special lunch.

It’s best to get your ticket in advance of the Park reopening from 7PM to Midnight. If you are so inclined, dress up in your favorite costume (no masks or Disney character look-a-likes, though!) You’ll receive a trick-or-treat bag to collect lots of candy handouts all around the place. Be sure to see Mickey’s “Boo-to-You” Halloween Parade with the Headless Horseman leading the way, and the extra special Happy HalloWishes fireworks show. Dance the night away at Stitch’s Cosmic Dance Party or the Get Up and Boo-gie Dance Party (with, guess who?). Your favorite Disney Villains are out en-masse tonight, including their own “Mix & Mingle” stage show in the Castle forecourt.
